THE BURROWS FAMILY OF TETTENHALL
AND
THE HOLLINSHEAD FAMILY OF WALSALL

by Ann Loffhagen (nee Burrows)

I am a descendant of Samuel BURROWS of Tettenhall and Mary HOLLINSHEAD of Walsall, who married on 8 June 1762 at St Matthews, Walsall. They are my 5x Great Grandparents.

A grandson of Samuel and Mary, John BURROWS, immigrated to New Zealand in 1851 on the ship 'Dominion'. A widower, he was accompanied by 5 of his children:-

John, b 1832
Samuel Hollinshead,  b 1835, Checkhill Mill, Kinver, bapt Enville
Caroline, b 1838
Walter James, b 1841, bapt Chelmarsh, Salop
Harriet, b 1845, Morfe farm, Enville, bapt Enville

Four have descendants in New Zealand.

John's wife was Mary BISHOP, whom he married at Clungunford, Shropshire in 1826.  Two daughters, Mary (b 1828) and Elizabeth (b 1830), may have married and remained in England.  John brought a family bible to New Zealand in which are recorded the births of his and Mary's children.  The births of John's father (Samuel) and uncle (John) are also recorded:

"Samuel Burrows was born the twenty eighth day of May an hour past eight at night anodomini 1763"
"John Burrows was born 29th day of May half an hour past eleven a.m. in the year 1768 on Trinity Sunday"

No place of birth was included.

Samuel Burrows (b.1763) attended Wolverhampton Grammar School c1771-1781 (source: Wolverhampton Grammar School Register 1515-1920).  He is recorded in J. A. Venn, Alumni Cantabrigiensis, Part II ,1752-1900:- admitted St Catherine's, Cambridge University, in 1782, graduated B.A. 1786, M.A. 1789.  Samuel was Rector of Highley, Salop, from 1790 until his death in 1844.  He married Elizabeth SHORT on 27 Aug 1794 at Dowles (daughter of John SHORT, born 12 Aug 1771 Minehead, Somerset).   A plaque in the Highley Church records Samuel's date and place of birth - 28 May 1763 at Tettenhall.   This information led to baptisms for Samuel and John in the Tettenhall parish registers and to burial entries at Tettenhall for John age 19 in 1788, and Samuel senior in 1789.  I have not been able to identify a baptism for Samuel senior who would have been born c 1730s and was 'of Tettenhall' in 1762.

Samuel (1763-1844) and Elizabeth had eleven children, ten baptised at Highley:

Samuel Hollinshead b 1795 (graduated B.A. 1816, M.A. 1820 Oxford   University, Vicar at Ellesmere, Salop)
Elizabeth b 1797, married Montague Lever SHORT (of Dublin) 1826, Highley
John b 1798, married Mary BISHOP 1826
Matthias b 1799
Walter b 1801
William b 1803 d 1866, unmarried, farmer at Highley
Henry b 1805 d 1816
Mary Ann b 1807, married William Manfield BRADY (physician) 1840 in Highley - she is on 1881 census living in Coppenhall, Nantwich, Cheshire, with a daughter Annie SMITH and 2 grandsons.
Harriet b 1808 d 1832, unmarried
Decimus b 1810 d 1882, unmarried, farmer at Highley
Caroline b 1812 d 1890, unmarried, lived with brother at Highley.

Mary HOLLINSHEAD was baptised 24 May 1736 at St Matthews, Walsall, daughter
of Richard and Mary HOLLINSHEAD.  Her parents Richard HOLLINSHEAD and Mary
SMITH were married in the same parish on 2 Nov 1723 and her father was baptised
there 25 Dec 1698.
