Wolverhampton's Listed Buildings

Gresham Chambers

6 - 20 (even) Lichfield Street

Listing: c1880. Vernacular revival and Jacobean style. Built as part of re-development of Lichfield Street in 1880s.

Comment:  The listing might have done better to have called it an Arts and Craft's version of Jacobean.  Note the studied asymmetry of the facade.

The buildings are part of the 1880s re-development of Lichfield Street.  They are large for their time and place, and are a reminder of the importance of Wolverhampton as a service centre - industry and commerce needed offices as well as factories and they also needed the solicitors, accountants and other services which would also have occupied these buildings.
