Wolverhampton's Locally Listed Buildings

Montford House

Parkdale East

Listing: Locally listed in 2004. Very large detached villa, 1890-1900.  Aesthetic Movement style.  Frontage has three storey drum tower with conical, tiled roof and deep oversailing cornices, almost fully glazed.  Complicated roofscape with chimneys and dormers.  Brick contrasting with half timbering.  Architect unknown.

Comment:  This is a very remarkable design. The houses on this side of Parkdale seem to have been larger and designed more freely than those on Parkdale West. This one is so free that it is not clear whether the disparate parts really come together.  Perhaps they weren't meant to.  But the result is remarkable. The architect is unknown despite considerable efforts to identify him.
