Wolverhampton Civic Centre

The Civic Centre was built in 1979 and was opened by the then Prime Minister James Callaghan. It is a large brick building that accommodates most Council departments under one roof. The old town hall became the Magistrate's Court.

With the building of the Civic Centre a fine new square was created on the site of the old Market Hall in front of St. Peter's Church. The picture shows this square being used by a group of children dancing round a May Pole whilst their parents look on appreciatively. The fine bronze statue of Lady Wulfruna on the right hand side of the picture was presented to the town in 1974 to commemorate the centenary of the Express and Star Newspaper. It was made by local sculptor Sir George Wheeler.
